His Majesty Shaikh Hamad is the eleventh ruler of direct descent of the Kingdom of Bahrain since 1783. Just as the mantle of leadership has passed from father to son over hundreds of years, so has the legacy of the Bahrain Arabian Horse Stud passed into the care of His Majesty Shaikh Hamad. His Majesty has been a renowned equestrian from an early age. His Majesty Shaikh Hamad, while Crown Prince in 1974, initiated the procedures that led to the Royal Arabian Stud of Bahrain becoming a fully fledged member of the World Arabian Horse Organization (W.A.H.O.) in 1980. Thus the Royal Arabian Stud of Bahrain has been internationally recognised for its ancient and splendid Bahrain Arabian horses.

His Majesty Shaikh Hamad has always been an ardent patron of equestrian events in Bahrain. His Majesty has particularly been interested in supporting Bahrainis, especially the young, in their endeavours as horsemen. As a result of His Majesty's Court promotes and sponsors prestigious equestrian events in Bahrain. These include all Arabian horse races, the Bahrain International Endurance Race and of course His Majesty's personal International Show Jumping Team.
